Lemon and Candy Stick Straws
Do you want a special treat for your kids that tastes sweet, fresh and fun? These lemons with candy stick straws will delight them. It had been years since I had this snack that takes me back to a certain fair in the town where I grew up. I wanted to re-create this memory with my own kids.
I do have a couple tips: the lemons seemed to work better than the oranges. I think the acidity from the lemon may have contributed to breaking down the sugar in the candy stick more. The heavy pulp in the orange also may have gotten in the way. It still worked, but the lemon was way better – both in taste and experience. We also found that some candy sticks worked better than others.
Materials Needed to Make Lemon and Orange Candy Stick Treats
- Candy Sticks
- Lemons (works best) or Oranges
- Knife
- Decorating Tip (optional)
First, you want to roll the fruit on the table, putting pressure on it. This will loosen the juice within the lemon. It’s a great thing to do before you need to get a juice out of a lemon for cooking or baking too. Next, poke a hole in the lemon the size of your stick. I used a decorating tip to make the perfect sized hole. I then stuck a knife in a little bit more to create the room for the stick.
Time to drink. I don’t know if it helped, but I cut the top and bottom off the stick thinking it might help the juice to flow through better. You need to suck really hard at first, but then the juice will start flowing through the stick. If it is working, but the juice stops flowing after a bit, you can move the stick around to loosen up the inside of the fruit. My kids loved it as much as I did when I was a girl. You could do this just for fun, or it would be a wonderful addition to your next party.
Interesting!
This looks like a wonderful treat! I have pinned and tweeted this post!
What a fun treat! Thanks for sharing!! I am going to have to try this!!
I am from Baltimore and it is our tradition to have lemons with peppermint sticks. The peppermint and lemon are so great!
Wow – I have never seen this before! So, does the sugar from the straw help the lemon one from being so tart? The orange one sounds great!
The sugar does sweeten it up quite a bit. I love it.
I have never seen this before. So cute. Where can you get those sticks?
Candy Sticks I’ve just seen at random stores or candy stores. I found these ones at a little market in our area. I would just keep my eyes out for them. Go into a candy store next time you get the opportunity. They used to be really common at the cash register in glass candy jars. Here’s a link to some online shopping. The link is kind of long, so if it doesn’t work, just type candy stick in google shopping, and you’ll have the results you need. http://www.google.com/search?client=safari&rls=en&q=candy+sticks&ie=UTF-8&oe=UTF-8#q=candy+sticks&hl=en&client=safari&rls=en&prmd=imvnse&source=lnms&tbm=shop&sa=X&ei=DgYaUPLKD6aRiAL864CgBQ&ved=0CE8Q_AUoBQ&bav=on.2,or.r_gc.r_pw.r_qf.&fp=6b365f36d96f7e3b&biw=1098&bih=599
try Cracker Barrel they have all kinds of old fashioned candy. -I’ve tried it w/oranges with small candy canes but peppermint is a bit strong-will try w/lemons
Thanks so much. That’s really helpful!
How cool is this! Are they just the regular candy sticks or are they hollow in the middle like a straw?
They are regular. Candy sticks are just porous, and the acid from the lemon eats away at the sugar when you start sucking.
What a great idea! What love to include the lemon w/ candy straws on CraftFoxes.com. Interested? Feel free to email me at bethany@craftfoxes.com.
Yummy! It would be great at a carnival party. I have never heard of this before. Thanks for sharing at Mom’s Library!
How fun is that?! I’ve never seen this idea before. But then again, you can’t find these candy sticks very often over here.. 😉
Thank you so much for sharing @ {nifty thrifty sunday}!
You will be featured at this week’s party!
XO! Vanessa
I am seventy plus years old and I remember like it was yesterday that my grandmother, who was born and lived in New York for many years, so don’t know if this is a NewYork thing, used to give us lemons and peppermint sticks. It would take a long time to “get them started” (sucking the juice up and hollowing out tracks in the candy) but
it kept us busy and happy for hours. If one is successful and patient, after sucking the lemon juice dry, the candy stick is delicious to finish off in a couple of bites and it is crumbly and lemon flavored. Delicious and fun ! My lemon tree is bare, the lemons have fallen off in the excessive heat, but when the new crop appears, I will have to try this with my grandkids. It is a good memory on so many levels.
I’ve seen the candy sticks at my favorite place….Walmart!
Woooow , Like It i Wanna make It For my Self 🙂
I have never heard of this before but I can’t wait to give it a try.
I have several flavors of candy canes left over from Christmas. I’m going to try breaking the hook off them and using the straight part. Hope it works.
Thanks for the idea!
Ooo – you’ll have to let me know if it works. Thanks for stopping by!
IN ORDER FOR THE JUICE TO FLOW FROM THE ORANGE OR LEMON IT IS BEST THAT YOU USE SOFT – POROUS CANDY STICKS NOT HARD CANDY STICKS OR REGULAR CANDY CANES. YOU CAN FIND SOFT PEPPERMINT STICKS AT CRACKER BARREL (BOB’S) OR ON THE INTERNET – RED BIRD, KING LEO, AUNT MAHALIA’S OR BOB’S. THE PEPPERMINT STICKS ARE SIMILAR TO PEPPERMINT PUFFS BUT IN STICK FORM. YOU CAN ALSO TRY SEARCHING “SOFT CANDY STICK OR SOFT SUGAR STICK.”
Thank you so much. This is really, really helpful information.
Interesting!
I loved this snack as a kid! My elementary school would sell them at special events.
Fun to find someone else who has done this before. It brought back so much nostalgia to do it with my kids. Thanks for commenting.
Was this at the Devon Horse Show and Fair? Held in May in Devon PA?? The only.place I’ve ever had “lemon sticks”. Such a great memory.
No. I’m in Washington state, and it was at a fair out here. Fun to know you have memories of this too.
