The first part involved taking out a lot of my letter manipulatives. I then sent Kenzie on a search for the letters a, e, i, o and u. You may not have anything like these letters. That’s fine. Look in books or magazines. Keep repeating the letters as you look. You want them to hear the vowel names over and over. You can also tell them there are as many vowels as they have fingers on one hand. That can help them try and check themselves to see if they can remember them.
This is a poem with the above motions to help do the sounds. You say the letter name, the short vowel sound and the word to help us remember like this:
A – a – Alligator
E – e – Elephant
I – i – Igloo
O – o – octopus
U – u – umbrella u umbrella u umbrella (Every time you do the u umbrella you have your arms out and bend at the waste like you are covering something)
