In my character development series, today’s focus is teaching consistency with a word ring.
This character development series has 52 different character traits to work on, one for each week of the year. Each week has seven or more lessons so you can be working on character with your kids every single day of the year.
The first day of the week always begins with a simple introduction to the word of the week. Consistency is the focus for this week.
This is a Christian character development series, so tying in scripture is always a part. You can work on the Bible verse every day of the week.
If you don’t believe in the Bible, I’d still encourage you to meditate on the words to weigh their value and wisdom. I would love you to know that if you are here but aren’t a Christian, there is still much to gain from this character development series. Explore and stick around. I love that you are here.
Teaching Consistency with a Word Ring
Bible Verse for Consistency
“Therefore, my beloved brothers, be steadiest, immovable, always abounding in the work of the Lord, knowing that in the Lord your labor is not in vain.” – 2 Corinthians 15:58
Definition of Consistency
The achievement of a level of performance that does not vary greatly in quality over time
Reason Chosen: I am wondering if this word was chosen more for us (the parents) or them (the kids). Admittedly, I haven’t been as consistent lately. It is showing in my children’s behavior.
It can be a really exhausting job…this parenting gig. I must admit at times I’m lazier than I should be. We need to work on consistency around here from all angles.
My children’s behavior definitely is not consistent. They will be angels a lot of the time and then suddenly turn on us. It’s like night and day.
There are a lot of behavioral issues we have worked on throughout their lives. Sometimes you wonder if they have ever learned the things we are trying to teach. I’ve found myself saying things like, “Have you ever gotten what you want by whining and crying? Why are you trying it now?”
We, as a family, feel like we have taken some backward steps in this area, so we’re cracking down again.
Are there lifelong benefits of consistency? There is a huge benefit in life to be a bit more even keeled. You want people to know what to expect from your behavior and to be able to know they can count on you. When you are known for being consistent, you gain credibility.
The highest aim is to work consistently for the Lord. This doesn’t mean staying busy all the time. It means resting in His grace, determining His will for your life and moving forward in obedience. He reminds us that His yolk is easy and His burden is light.
How to Make a Word Ring
At the beginning of each week, the craft will be exactly the same because we will simply be adding a new word to our already established word ring.
Materials Needed to Make a Word Ring
Making a Word Ring
- Have kids chose a paper style and sticker letters.
- Then cut the paper to the same size as the paper from last week. We made our papers size 9″x3″.
- Help the kids sound out “consistency.” With multiple kids they can take turns finding the letters needed and sticking them on the paper…they’re kids – the letters will not be stuck on perfect.
- I then wrote the Bible verse on the back. If your kids are older, have them do it themselves. We’ll spend this week learning the word meaning and memorizing the scripture.
- Have kids punch a hole in the corner. Add this new word onto the binding clip so it joins the rest of the words in the character development series.
- Each week, a new word will be added to the clip in similar fashion.
Hoping this character development series becomes a great part of your home life with kids.
Thanks for sharing all of your ideas! I put my boys down for naps after coming home from MOPs and immediately took a peak at your blog. I am excited to use it as a resource!
