Every now and then I want to make some progress in the clean up of a space, but I don’t want to make a big ordeal of it. I am also not concerned, in the moment, of having it all picked up 100%. In those moments, I’ll advise them to pick up as many items as their age. Abby picks up five. Kenzie picks up three. Corban picks up one. This is not an overwhelming number to them. They can do it relatively quickly. If I do it at random times throughout the day we may have a bedroom or play area cleaned by the end of the day. I also might do it before a certain activity, telling them they’ll be able to go outside, start a craft or get lunch once their number of items is picked up.

This sounds like a great idea.
Wonderful idea!!!! I was just lamenting the fact that there are toys & books all over my living room making it difficult for me to vacuum. My oldest, 4yrs, will tell me periodically, this house is a mess. Well, pick up YOUR toys & then it won’t be.
Thanks for the idea from this day & then from 01/19/2013.
That’s a great idea. That would be really great to use in the classroom when “nobody” got anything out, but we suddenly have a bunch of unattended items on the floor.
