Day #6 Tip of the Day – If You Want to Disobey, Ask First

January 6, 2012 · by jodidurr · Leave a Comment

I have been working on training my kids to ask rather than tell.  It used to look like this:
Me:  “Abby, Come into the living room please.”
Abby:  “I’m going to finish coloring this picture first.”
Our goals is to get it to look like this:
Me:  “Abby, Come into the living room please.”
Abby:  “May I finish coloring this picture first?”
When they respond the second way, I generally try and let them finish what they are doing.  Sometimes it’s just not possible because we have to go or I know they are stalling on something, but I like to reward them for asking me rather than telling me.
