Character Building: Teaching Appreciation

This week is “appreciation” week at Meaningful Mama. These salsa mason jar gifts teach kids about appreciation.

Biblical character is so important to teach kids. Showing kids how to show appreciation is part of that. If you aren’t familiar with my character development series, please hover over the character development tab and explore all the words we are working on this year.

Why salsa? If you were on my blog yesterday, you know that there were tons of fresh tomatoes in my garden. I needed to do something with these tomatoes, and salsa seemed a logical choice. Please check back for my fresh tomato salsa recipe.

There are many ways to show appreciation for people and all they do for us. We decided to both use these salsa mason jar gifts and our words of explanation.

I had the kids brainstorm who we would give these mason jars to. We ended up giving them to a teacher, a coach, a mentor, church AWANA teachers, the children’s director at our church, and some people in our small group.

I did 4 times the recipe and was able to make 12 jars with some left over for our family.  These aren’t the big jars. They were 8 ounces.

I made you a free printable so you could easily re-create these fun little jar tags to put on your own salsa treats. The tag says, “Thank You for Spicing Up Our Lives.” I hope you have also seen my tutorial on making decorative lids for mason jars. It is so easy!

I didn’t take my camera when we were out and about delivering our salsa jars. I talked to the kids, brainstorming about why we are appreciative of these people. I had them delivering most of them and tried to help them articulate their appreciation.

We’re still working on it.

I hope you can find ways to show appreciation for people in your own lives. You, too, can make these salsa jars relatively inexpensively. However, you can make homemade cards, cookies, or give small gifts.

In Abby’s class, her teacher is teaching the kids about learning to fill up each other’s buckets with kindness. When we gave her the salsa, she said Abby filled up her bucket with that act. I love that she is being taught character at school, too.
