Are you a LEGO fan? I know I am. Kids use their imagination to create their own designs or learn to follow step-by-step instructions to construct buildings, vehicles and so much more. My children just received a new LEGO DUPLO set that has already provided so much engagement in our home. I want to show you the big farm that we received, but I also want to provide you with 15 learning activities with LEGO DUPLO. I am also giving away a $50 LEGO gift card to one lucky Meaningful Mama reader.

I need to tell you that the knock on the door that brought our LEGO DUPLO set couldn’t have come at a better time. It was a sick day for my daughter, Abigail, and me. It wasn’t one of those days where we were completely out for the count. Abby had enough energy to want to do something but wasn’t healthy enough to head to school. I was super low energy and not feeling well throughout the day. Further, we are doing some construction on our home and had no power. Therefore, we were trying to conjure up enough energy to play games and read books rather than just make it a movie day, which was, let’s be honest, what I really wanted to do. It just wasn’t an option. Then, the welcomed UPS man arrived at the door with the LEGOS DUPLOS big farm set that kept my kids occupied for a good couple hours straight. They kept returning to it throughout the day too.

The box says for ages 2-5, but I must say that my 7 year old was just as engaged as my four year old. She became the builder who wanted to make sure the instructions were followed and the farm was made. My son was much more interested in open ended play with all of the bricks, characters and farm animals. They worked together at times and they did their own thing at times. They constructed, and the farm was built. However, the play didn’t stop there. It was time to engage with their new environment. My daughter set off to build the backdrop for a performance she had in mind. The LEGO DUPLO blocks would become part of the set. My son stayed at the table with the farm and talked to himself in play with voices for the character and scenes he imagined. It was a delight to watch. Being a sick mom, that is what I had the energy for too – to sit and observe. I too often am off doing dishes, folding laundry, paying bills, working on my blog or any other number of responsibilities. However, today I lounged on the couch and watched. I was really amazed at the level of engagement and the length of play, and it was a saving grace for me on this sick day. Really, it was a blessing that we had no power for the day. It forced me to be a better mom. It made me slow down enough to observe my children in play and just let them create. It was a good day.

I can’t help but share with you a little video I took of my son interacting with the LEGO play set. I should have really taken a number of videos and spliced them together. It was super cute to watch his interactive play. You can see my YouTube video here.

These LEGO DUPLO building sets are fabulous. This was our first one. Yes, we have LEGO DUPLO bricks for open ended creation, and my children enjoy building their own designs with those. They were hand-me-down sets, so I never had instructions or all of the pieces. I really love what happened when we had the full set to this farm.

I was inspired today by our own organic play, but I have also been inspired by the amazing set of ideas other bloggers have come up with to help aid in learning by using LEGOS. I thought I would introduce you to the wonderful learning activities for kids that involve LEGO DUPLO bricks. You can use the bricks to learn patterns, numbers, letters, words, measuring and so much more.

With a little parent direction, you can turn LEGO bricks into learning opportunities.
