Today I introduced my kids to the word “symmetry.
The first thing I did was draw half a shape. Then I would hold up a little mirror to show them how the other half shows up to make the shape whole. They mirror edge was the line of symmetry and things were perfectly the same on either side.
The next thing I had them do was fold stock paper in half. Then, we opened it up and put globs of paint into the center. You fold again and press the paint from the center out. I remember doing this in elementary school, so it was fun to visit it again. The kids thought it was so cool. After the paint dried, I cut the pieces of paper into butterfly shapes. To keep Corban entertained, I gave him his own little paper plate with paint and a brush.
That’s an awesome way to teach a tricky word.:)
Thanks. I am always convinced that kids can absorb bigger words. They are just sponges at this age. It was a fun craft.
I always loved to do activities like that when I was younger, brings back happy memories! Thanks Jodi!
Coming up with the idea took me back too. It was fun to see their surprised faces when they opened the paper.
