For those of you that are new around here, you’ll soon find out that I love having my kids helping in the kitchen. Because it’s easier for me? Not so much. However, it’s so fun for them, and I can see them learning and growing through the experience. A lot of people might find me crazy to have a 19 month old helping dump all the ingredients or a 2 year old breaking eggs. I still think that the time in the kitchen together is so important for a child’s growth.
My husband grew up with Ranger Cookies. This is a recipe I married into. I can see why it is one of his favorites. This week we made cookies for VBS, which is going on at our church this week. My husband was thrilled that I doubled the batch so that we’d have some of our own. I did half without chocolate chips (my husband’s favorite way) and decided to throw chocolate chips in the second batch. I liked that addition.
Ranger Cookies
1/2 cup butter
1/2 cup brown sugar
1/2 cup white sugar
1 egg
1/2 tsp. vanilla
1 cup flour
1/2 tsp. baking soda
1/4 tsp. baking powder
1/2 tsp. salt
1 cup oatmeal
1 cup Rice Crispies
Soften butter and mix wet ingredients with the sugar. Mix in all the dry ingredients except the Rice Crispies and Oatmeal. After mixed, add the Rice Crispies and Oatmeal and stir by hand. Bake at 350 for 10 minutes.
If you are always perplexed by your baking skills (or lack their of) and can’t figure out what is going wrong, there are a couple of things to check. First of all, did you follow the recipe precisely. Cooking is very different than baking in this way. It’s more of a science, and if you want to nail a recipe, follow the recipe. The second thing is to check your baking sheets. The cookies above were made the exact same way. They are from the same batch of dough. They were scooped out the same way and made the exact same size ball. Why the difference? One is flat and spread out. The other is how the cookie was suppose to look. The difference? The cookie sheet. The quality of your cookie sheet really does make a huge difference. Currently I only have one that I really like the results of, and it is the Caphalon insulated cookie sheet. I need to purchase another one. The proof is in the picture.
Love that you have your little ones in the kitchen. I’m encouraged to see that they are becoming good helpers. We recently purchased a used learning tower so my boys can watch and “help” while I make lunch, etc. I hope that this will help them to love cooking, eating, and helping down the road. Here are my little guys in the kitchen not too long ago:

Btw, I also love your hug/kiss post. Couldn’t agree more. 🙂
That is just so cute. They’ll be pros in no time. It really is amazing when you start to see them really becoming helpful. My oldest can be doing things now while I’m doing some of the dishes. Love that you see the value in starting them young.
Jodi those cookies look so good! Thanks for stopping by Piggy In Polka Dots! I love your blog and what you are about! I am following now and am looking forward to your future posts and checking out your others!

These look sooooo good … and I can certainly use any tips you offer … the cookie sheet thing I never knew and I am not all that great at following the recipe. Just ask my husband. ;0
Yeah – Baking is crazy that way. My sister is fabulous at cooking because she loves to wing it. She creates great stuff that I’d probably never come close to creating without a recipe. You should see her bake though…winging it just wasn’t working for her.
This is Melissa @ Daisy Mae Belle. Those cookies look delicious! I wish I had a batch of them in my oven right now!
I hope you try the recipe. I think you’d enjoy.
I’m not familiar with these cookies and they look great!
I have rice crispies and oatmeal and would love to try
So cool that you have the ingredients, Winnie. When I saw you commenting I was wondering if you’d have Rice Crispies where you are. I hope you’ll try them out.

Like I said, besides chocolate chip cookies, I think they’re my husband’s favorites. I hope you enjoy!
