Part of being available is being a ready and willing to jump and go at any minute. If you have a willingness and the right skills waiting to serve, then you have potential energy. Once the chance comes, your stored energy turns into kinetic energy as you choose to serve or be with people.
To explore this concept today we gathered a rubber band, balloon and a rock. My husband has taught them about kinetic and potential energy before, so this was a good follow-up to that lesson. I showed them how each of these three items has potential energy. A rubber band stretched out (potential energy) will fling across the room (kinetic energy) as it is released. A blown up balloon (potential energy) will fly across the room once the air is released (kinetic energy). A rock held in the air (potential energy) will fall to the earth once you let go (kinetic energy). I then talked about availability and how we make ourselves available (potential energy) so we are ready to act when a need or opportunity arises (kinetic energy). I got this idea from the “Character First” curriculum.
