Part of being curious is learning how to ask questions. Today, I held up a pepper. You can use any thing you find. I said, “What do you want to ask about this pepper?” I encouraged them to think about what they didn’t know and were curious about. Here was their list:
* How does a pepper grow?
* Why is it green?
* How does it turn green? (which is basically the same question, but Kenzie made me write it down)
* How does it taste?
* How do you cook it?
* What is inside it?
* How does it smell?
As we did our research, those questions led to a couple more:
* How do you cut a pepper?
* What are the health benefits of a pepper?
I was able to cut it up. Abby tasted it, loved it, and ate a bunch. Kenzie, as I guessed, had no desire to taste it. She isn’t quite willing to step out of her comfort zone with food. I demonstrated how to cut it up. They got to look inside. They both smelled it. We then looked up a YouTube video on how to grow peppers. We also read in Wikipedia and a food health site some of the answers to the other questions. I ended by encouraging them to think about questions like this and seek answers so they can continue to be curious about their world.
