This is a simple adaption to normal Checkers. I got this cheap version of checkers at the dollar store. I cut out little black squares and wrote high frequency words on them. Abigail stuck them down to the black spaces on the board with double stick tape, and we were ready to play. The only rule that is different than normal Checkers is, if you want to move to a space, you need to read the word on that space. This was Abby’s first introduction to Checkers at all, so I was excited at how quickly she picked it up. This can be adapted in lots of ways – math facts, vocabulary, letters and sounds…have fun with it.
We did this with math problems. I love the idea of practicing sight words this way! Thanks for sharing!!
