DIY I Spy Art for Kids

This DYI I Spy art for kids is super simple to do, and the kids love it. The concept is that the kids gather a bunch of stuff and glue it to a piece of paper. Simple, right? They can then play I Spy with their piece of art. This easy and inexpensive craft idea is great for kids age 3 and older. For younger children, of course, be present to make sure they don’t put small items in their mouth. At 8 years old, my daughter still wanted to make her own with my the 4 and 6 year old. Modeled after the fabulous I Spy books and games, this artwork provides much entertainment for the whole crew. If you enjoy the I Spy Books as much as we do, you might also enjoy this I Spy activity idea.

Materials Needed for I Spy Kid Craft

  • White Glue
  • Stock Paper – You can use regular paper, but stock paper provides some stability.
  • Variety of Craft Supplies: Feathers, Beads, Foam Letters, Dried Beans, Google Eyes, Cereal, Buttons, pieces of fabric and any other collection of craft supplies you might have around the house. You can visit my affiliate links, but the Dollar Store is also a great options when looking for random stuff to use for this project.

There are no rules for how to go about designing an I Spy piece of artwork. Kids can paste and glue to their hearts’ delight. Each piece of artwork will be unique to that child. The art can have a different feel if a child decided to grab a black background paper and go more monotone with what they glue down.

After the children create their artwork and let it dry, they can play I Spy with one another. They can take turns revealing their artwork and making up their own I Spy Phrases. Older kids might enjoy writing out their own poems, similar to the books. I could actually see this as a rhyming and poetry lesson for older elementary kids as well.

Enjoy this time with your kids and make sure to see if you can spy all of the things they have hidden in their pictures.
