Mother’s day is just around the corner, and these DIY Mother’s Day Frames for Kindergarten Classroom Project were what we created in my son’s classroom this year. Being the room mom, I get the privilege of coming up with ideas for these special occasions. It is something I enjoy. I wanted to come up with a craft idea that the kids could do, but I wanted the quality to be high and the sentiment to be meaningful. These adorable wooden frames covered in craft paper with customized messages and pictures of their kids was the perfect solution to a DIY Mother’s Day craft and gift from kids.
DIY Mother’s Day Frames for Kindergarten Classroom Project – Materials Needed
- Wooden Craft Frames
(I found mine at Michael’s for $1 a piece. The ones I linked to are similar with different dimensions and are less than a $1 a piece when you buy 24.) - Mod Podge
- Sponge Brushes
- Paint Cup (I used disposable plastic.)
- Book of Scrapbook Paper (I think light weight scrapbook paper is better for Mod Podge.)
- Pencil
- Scissors
- White Paper
- Sharpie
- White Roll Paper
- Masking Tape
- Camera
- Sand Paper
- Craft Flower (I looked for ones on sale at Michael’s, but I’ve linked to something similar.)
- Hot Glue
- X-Acto Knife

DIY Mother’s Day Frames for Kindergarten Classroom Project – Directions
- Draw a word bubble in Sharpie.
- Make enough copies of the word bubble for everyone in the class.
- Have kids complete the sentence, “My mom…” or “My mom is…”
- In their own writing, have the child write their phrase in the word bubble using Sharpie.
- Cut out the word bubble so you can still see the black sharpie outline.
- Set up a photo both, hanging a large piece of white paper.
- Using masking tape, attach the child’s word bubble to the height of their mouth.
- Take a picture of the child.
How cute are they?!
- Kids then picked out the scrapbook paper they wanted. I encouraged them to think of their mom’s style and favorite colors or patterns.
- I then lined up the frame on two of the sides and had them trace the other two sides in pencil. I made sure it was big enough, but it didn’t have to be perfect.
- I then cut out the paper. While I did this, I had the kids writing their name on the back of the frame.
- Next the kids applied the Mod Podge.
- I carefully laid the paper on top. Here are my favorite tips for using Mod Podge.
- Allow these to dry.
- The next step was to use the X-Acto knife to cut around the edges and the inside of the frame. I did this at home on my own.
- Sand down the inside and outside edges of the frame. I did this step at home also, but you could have kids participate.
- The kids can now put a final coat of Mod Podge on the top.
- If desired, have them add a flower accent to the corner of the frame using hot glue.
- Insert the pictures.
