Hi, I have NEVER made or used royal frosting. I saw a site where someone made a “pizza” cookie and I want to do it for my daughter’s birthday. I know they used a lot of frosting, and said they “thickened” the red royal frosting to make it look like sauce when they spread it on. I can’t get any feedback from them, but do you have any suggestions? THanks so much!
Hi! I’m sorry you haven’t gotten any response from them. Hopefully, I can help you out. From what I understand you are describing, I would not use a royal frosting. In my opinion, royal frosting does not taste very good, but it acts as more of a glue for gingerbread houses or creating a really strong hold in cake decorating. It dries totally stiff. I would use a buttercream for what you are describing. Here’s a link to the buttercream frosting I like to use: https://meaningfulmama.com/2012/04/day-103-buttercream-icing.html. To thinking frosting, you add more powdered sugar until your desired consistency. I would make it as the recipe states, and then I would add bits of powdered sugar at a time until it get the thickness you want. From what I am picturing, I image you wouldn’t really need to add much (if any at all) to get the look you are going for. Please write back with any more questions or clarifications. You could always send me the link so I could see exactly what you are going for. Good luck.
How far in advance can I make this? My husband is a math teacher & needs it for a project.
What I learned in royal icing is that you want to store in with a damp paper towel over it. You don’t want to keep it in a plastic container that has held anything else at any time. I have labeled a specific plastic container that has only held royal icing. However, you can store in in a glass or metal bowl, as it doesn’t retain any of the grease. Just put a damp paper towel over it and cover with plastic wrap. I hope that’s helpful.
Hi , it’s difficult to get Cream if Tartar Ican I still make the frosting without it??
I’m not sure. I’m so sorry. I’ve never tried it that way! It does act as a stabilizer, so I would be hesitant to do it without it.
Can the royal icing be put into piping bags for overnight storage as opposed to having it covered with a wet towel?
I do think that would work, although I have never tried it. I think I would put the damp towel over the icing bag. Let me know how it turns out!
