In the past, our church has chosen a theme that takes the kids back to Bible Days. This year is completely different with a more modern science theme. The theme that was chosen is called Basic Elements, with the BASIC standing for Believe (1 John 5:11-12), Ask (Matthew 7:7), Serve (1 Peter 4:9-10), Impact (Acts 1:8) and Celebrate (Revelation 21:3-4). It has fun experiments, music and lessons that go along with the week.
The whole VBS program looks engaging, fun and a vehicle for truth to be shared with kids. Where I did find it lacking was the direction for decoration. While there were some YouTube decoration ideas, I felt like the large scale ones were expensive to pursue. I didn’t get an idea for what the entire scene would look like, and I didn’t get a clear vision of what to do from looking at the resources provided.
Therefore, I had to come up with my own ideas using a combination of my imagination as well as using our friendly Pinterest for inspiration. I will link back to other blogs when possible. That said, unfortunately, many of the links on my VBS science Pinterest inspiration board led to just an image link with no real source. Therefore, I won’t be able to give proper credit where it is due. You can follow all of my Pinterest boards here.
Science Decorations for Vacation Bible School
At our church, we have accordion room dividers. We put these up toward the back of the stage and covered them with a lime green plastic table cover roll.
I wanted to create the BASIC component of the science VBS theme as laid out in periodic table style. I also wanted to create other elements from the periodic table. To do this, I used plain white scrapbook paper. I took black poster board letters and stuck them in the center of the scrapbook paper with double stick tape. I then used 1″ black letter stickers and numbers to create the element and corresponding number or Bible verse when needed. The ones I linked to are black glittery, which I think is fun, but the once I actually purchased were from Michael’s.
After creating the periodic table elements, I was ready to hang them. I wanted to hang everything on a diagonal for an artistic touch. I interspersed the white periodic table elements with orange scrapbook paper. I used a stapler and staples to hang everything. The final backdrop was fun with its pops of colors and yet purposeful design.
Science Decorations for Vacation Bible School – Balloon Double Helix
I decided a fun and easy display of color would be to create balloon columns using yellow, orange and lime green 12″ balloons. The goal was to make it allude to the idea of a double helix. I watched a fabulous YouTube tutorial about how to make balloon columns, and it was so easy! We used a double quick pump to blow up the balloons quickly. Here’s a guide on how many balloons you might need. Don’t forget that you’ll need twice as many balloons of one of the colors. I found that out the hard way. We spiraled our balloon columns up a microphone stand, which the church had and worked perfectly.
Science Decorations for Vacation Bible School – Toxic Waste Barrels
I made these toxic waste barrels by following the fabulous tutorial I found here. I asked on our church website if anyone had any old water barrels, and someone had a couple to donate. Using black spray paint, white spray paint, and insulation foam, I was able to create these. See the tutorial I linked to for full instructions.
Science Decorations for Vacation Bible School – Other Elements
Using black poster board, we created beakers with yellow “liquid” (i.e. yellow plastic table cloth) flowing out and stapled against the backdrop.
The front of the stage and top border of the divider were lined with caution tape for an added element of design. I used double stick tape to adhere this to the surfaces.
I put one of our fabulous teenagers in charge of making me a bunch of these scan to enter signs to put in various places the kids would be entering throughout the church. I thought the kids would have a lot of fun with this little detail.
I hope these science decorations for Vacation Bible School help you as you are planning your own science themed event.
