Paul and Silas Craft for Kids
This post was originally part of my AWANA Cubbies series, where I was creating crafts for Cubbies. The official AWANA curriculum has changed, so I do not know if they still do a Paul and Silas craft. That said, I still believe there is value in this great lesson that teaches about these two heros of faith, their time in prison, and the truth that God is always with us.
If you are not familiar with Paul, he was a man who was out to persecute Christians. He was a very religious Jew and saw the message of Jesus as a threat to the Jewish God he knew. However, he then encountered the resurrected Christ firsthand, and his life was transformed.
He began to understand that Jesus is the Messiah they had been waiting for and the fulfillment of the Jewish scriptures. Just as anyone who encounters Jesus, his life did a 180, and he ended up in chains because of the message Jesus brought to the Jews and the rest of the world.
Paul and Silas were missionaries telling other people about the gospel message. While in prison, they sang songs and praises to God. They remembered the truth God claimed – “I am with you always” Matthew 28:20 – and it kept their hope alive.
The story proceeded from there with an earthquake that set them free and a jailer who panicked in the situation.
Rather than running free when the prison doors were opened, Paul and Silas stayed, witnessed to the jailer, and the jailer’s life was transformed in those prison cells and the walls beyond, as his family was changed as well.
I created a craft that brought this story to life both with the scripture and by representing the story visually.

How to do this Paul and Silas Craft for Kids
Print the free printable onto 6 different pieces of colored paper. There will be one word per color.Â
Cut out all of the strips. If you are working with a number of young kids, you can prep this for them. However, if you have smaller numbers or older kids, they can cut on their own.Â
I had my little helpers the day I was prepping this craft for Cubbies. Yes, it took twice as long with their help, but I was there to teach them to use the cutter – often guiding their hands and adjusting paper.
This chain is meant to be a scripture reminder – “I am with you always.” Matthew 28:20. Although Paul and Silas were imprisoned for their bold proclamation and teaching of Jesus, I know they were holding onto the truth that God was with them. This is what caused them to rejoice.
I used tape to hold it all together. Tape is easy for little kids. However, a stapler, glue dots, or glue tape works great too. Make a circle with the first word (I), and tape it together. Link the next word (am), and fasten it in place. Keep making links until you have a chain with the entire Bible verse.Â
Each child will walk away with a paper chain to remind them of the story of Paul and Silas. Even though these men were in chains for preaching the gospel of Jesus, they continued to praise God because they knew that God was always with them.

I’m sorry. It’s been a busy week with the end of school year stuff. I have tried to fix it, but I don’t have ink right now to test it out. Will you go to the link and try again. Dropbox has been giving me some issues lately, so I’ve set it up a different way. Thanks for letting me know your issues, and I hope I was able to get it working for you.
All I get is the instructions. I thought the words for the verse were included.
