Whether you are teaching letters, sight words, math, vocabulary, or a foreign language, the muffin tin learning game is just what you need to make learning both engaging and fun for kids. Kids often grasp concepts better through games and kinesthetic learning, so this is the perfect resource for you as you teach.

Muffin Tin Learning Game
I’m a teacher by trade. While I did spend time in the classroom, the perfect fit for me was when I had my own tutoring business. I loved working one-on-one with kids. Great growth can be had with focused attention.
Games were my go-to. I always believed I could trick kids into learning by making it fun, and it worked.
This carried over into my parenting when I became a stay-at-home mom. While I didn’t feel called to homeschool, I still worked with my children on learning to read, learn math facts, and study the world. Taking the tools I learned in the classroom and in my tutoring life, I made learning an everyday part of our lives while my kids were young.
Yes, you want your kids to be kids and have free-roaming time with lots of unstructured, creative play. It’s important for them to experience boredom.
However, I also believe there is room for structured time. I treated our home, at times, like a fun preschool. Muffin tin learning was one of the tools in my toolbox for making learning fun.

- Muffin Tin
- Index Cards
- Scissors
- Pen
- Bowl of Mixed Coins

How to Play the Muffin Tin Learning Game
- Cut the index cards into small pieces, small enough for one to fit inside a muffin tin. On these pieces of paper, write what the child needs to learn. These can be sight words, letters, math facts, foreign language words, state capitals, vocabulary words, etc.
- Fill your muffin tin full of these items. For example, if you are learning letters, you would put one letter per tin (a total of 12).
- Have kids scoot back an appropriate distance (based on their age and coordination level). They should have the bowl of coins with them.
- Kids then take turns throwing a coin and trying to land it in a tin. If it lands, they get to try to give the answer to the problem or identify the word, letter, or meaning of what is on the cards. If they get it correct, the coin stays in the spot. If not, the coin is removed to be thrown again.
- The game ends when the muffin tin is filled or when a row or column is filled. You can also just play for a certain amount of time, and whoever has the most coins in the end wins.
- This game can also be played individually, with kids just trying to accomplish all they can. In this photo example with my kids, Kenzie (the younger one) was working with her own tin full of letters to learn. Abby (the older one) was working on sight words or simple words in her muffin tin.

I hope your kids or students have fun with this simple learning game.
