While this particular cake was made for a baby boy, this is a baby shower cake idea for a girl or boy. All you do is switch out the color fondant to match your shower theme, and you are set to go. This is an easy and quick design for even the most novice of cake decorators. It has a modern feel with the swooping design up the side. Baby Shower Cake Idea for a Girl or Boy
Our boy shower had a blue and burlap color theme. I have had the idea to do a baby shower cake with mini baby cookie cutters. The only problem was I could never find mini cookie cutters in baby themed shapes.
Then, one day, I passed the clay section at a craft store. There they were. The perfect set of cutters for a baby theme. Ahhh! I had been holding on to these cutters for quite some time. With this shower, I finally had the opportunity to execute my design.
How to Make Baby Shower Cake Idea for a Girl or Boy
The first thing you need to do is cover your cake in white fondant. I like the Satin Ice brand I have linked to here. If you are new to cake decorating, I have a few resources for you that I think will help. I think you will find my Cake Decorating 101, Cake Decorating 201 and Must-Have Cake Decorating Tools posts very informative.
I have a few fun new resources for you too. I did 3 Facebook live posts while I made this cake, so you can see how I did my crumb coat, how I did my fondant covering and some cake storing tips. These were a lot of fun to do and might be helpful as you continue on your own cake decorating journeys.
For this cake, I simply covered my cake in white fondant and then used the clay baby cookie cutters to cut the baby shapes out of blue fondant. I then started placing them in a swooping design up the side of the cake. To attach fondant cut outs, simply use a little bit (not too much or the color will run) of water on a clean paint brush. Add a tad of water on the back of the piece you are attaching and put on the side of the cake. It’s that easy.
We enjoyed celebrating my friend’s new baby, coming November. I hope this cake design might usher in a few more baby births. Stay tuned for all of the components of this blue and burlap bow time themed baby shower.
