I have people in this blog world who enjoy seeing some of the cakes I’ve done in the past. So, every once in a while I thought I’d throw one out there for you. Thanks for taking an interest in these. It’s been such a fun hobby for me. I loved making this cake for my brother-in-law. He wanted a banjo for his birthday, so my sister thought it would be fun if I did this. He got a real banjo too. I built this cake to scale, and I really worked on the details.
Wow! This is amazing! How did you do it? My brother would love this!

I had so much fun with this cake. I got all the proper dimension to the cake and even looked up how to make a real banjo to understand how it’s put together. My husband is amazing and was able to make the frame, which was basically a circular piece with the attached neck that gave the basic shape for the banjo. The body was all cake. The neck was built of rice crispy treats. Fondant covered the whole thing. Thanks for taking an interest.
Hi, I am getting ready to make a banjo birthday cake for my husband who is a banjo player. I have made them in the past, but nowhere as beautiful as yours. Could you send me the step-by-step process? I am especially interested in how to create the decorations. All I know is how to cover a round chocolate cake with rolled-out marzepan, cut up a rectangular cake for the neck, and use black licorice shoelace for the strings. Nothing else!
Thanks!
Arlette
Hey – I did this a while ago before I was a blogger. I wish I had pictures of the process. It would be so much easier. The first thing to know is that my husband built the base out of wood. The base was a circle. Attached to that was a 90 piece that then attaches the wooden neck. The wooden base kind of looks like a frying pan in shape. I wanted to do it to scale, so I got actual dimension from banjo building sites like this one: http://thehub.musiciansfriend.com/folk-instrument-buying-guides/banjos-how-to-choose. I built up the neck a bit with rice crispies, which tend to mold easily to the shape you want. I then covered the neck in black fondant. The details are all cut out or molded from fondant or gum paste. Some of the fondant details were painted silver by combining edible silver decorating powder with either lemon juice or vodka. You then just paint the mixture on the white fondant. The cake was the head portion of the banjo. The “strings” were not edible. They were fishing wire. I took little pins and pinned them into the cake, and “strung” them down to the end. I wrapped those around my fondant pegs and may have pinned it in place down there. You can see, visually, how I just built up the fondant in layers and worked out the details. I hope that description is helpful. It was a lot of work, and it took a lot of attention to details. It’s so fun to create something like this though. let me know how it goes.
That is so cool, I wish I can make cakes like that. Did you take a class or learned on your own?
Thank you! I am pretty much self taught. I did take a couple classes at Michael’s, but it was all dealing with frosting and piping work. I do mostly fondant, so it didn’t translate much even though it was fun. For me, it’s been just a bit of learning with every cake…a lot experimentation. If you have an interest, jump on in. I have loved this hobby.

I have no ambitions of opening my own cake store, but I always thought that “Edible Design” would be the name. Love that you said “edible art.” Thanks so much.
