* WARNING – HOT GRIDDLES CAN BURN PEOPLE. DO THIS ACTIVITY UNDER CAREFUL ADULT SUPERVISION. CHECK THE TEMPERATURE OF YOUR GRIDDLE. PUT A NEWSPAPER OR OTHER PAPER BETWEEN THE PAPER YOU ARE COLORING TO REDUCE HEAT AND PROTECT GRIDDLE (I DISCOVERED THIS LAST PART AFTER I HAD TAKEN THE PICTURES). KEEP CHECKING THE HEAT LEVEL. I UNPLUGGED MINE A FEW TIMES TO REDUCE THE HEAT.
This is an activity I remember doing as a child. My mom was so great at finding creative things for me to do. I have thought about doing this activity a number of times, but I didn’t have a griddle, and I kept forgetting to check at Goodwill. Ashely from a Life with Moore Babies inspired me when she commented on my Fall Leaf Crayon Craft. The concept is simple. Turn on a griddle to the lowest setting. I bought this one at Goodwill for $7. Then, put down a newspaper or other paper to protect griddle and keep heat lower. Put your piece of paper you want to color on top. Color away. Sometimes you have to hold the crayon there for a bit before it starts melting. The melted wax almost gives a paint-like effect.
Thanks for mentioning us! We had a lot of fun with our colors, and will definitely do it again. We even turned our griddle off after it was warm enough to melt the crayons (turning it back on as needed). You definitely got some pretty pictures!
If you have a warming tray, it doesn’t get as hot as a griddle. Thanks for you great ideas.
