Fourth of July is coming up around the bend. It’s time for me to start doing crafts and decorations that teach about our country, our history and the meaning behind the symbols. This is a great craft to teach about the symbolism behind our flag. We had a lot of fun making this American flag out of crepe paper we bought from the Dollar Tree. This is done on tag board, so it is big enough to be a great decoration for any Fourth of July party. Kenzie and I did this one together while Abby was at school and Corban was napping.
You will need tag board, crepe paper, star stickers, Mod Podge and a foam brush.
We did one stripe at a time. You want to work quickly, foaming the Mod Podge onto the tagboard in stripes as thick as the crepe paper.
Then, you unroll the crepe paper in stripes. It is that simple. We did the 6 bottom stripes of the flag.
Then, we drew a line to separate where we wanted the rest of the stripes and the blue square.
We continued down the full piece of tag board until the rest of the stripes were done. The crepe paper happen to fit the tag board almost perfectly.
The next step was to fill in the blue area by doing the blue crepe paper in a similar fashion. I did the stripes in a different direction for contrast in the striping.
Once that was done we started sticking down the 50 stars.
There you have a great American flag craft that your kids can do to help decorate for your next Fourth of July party. Not hosting? That doesn’t need to stop you from doing a fun craft for this holiday to celebrate the independence of our country and teach your kids about the symbolism behind the flag. Do you know the symbolism? The 13 stripes represent the 13 original colonies. The 50 stars represent the 50 states. That I did know. I didn’t know the colors had meaning as well until I looked it up today. This is what I found: Red symbolizes Hardiness and Valor, White symbolizes Purity and Innocence and Blue represents Vigilance, Perseverance and Justice. Hopefully, we have parents out there trying to raise their children with these character qualities.
Love this craft!!! Thanks so much for sharing it!
Thanks! I’m so glad you like it!
