Doing a Christmas light scavenger hunt has been a tradition of ours for years. We have friends who have felt like family. We have basically raised our children together.
For years, we have had a tradition where we get together in our pajamas for a pizza dinner, go on a Christmas light scavenger hunt, and then come home for hot chocolate, popcorn, and watching the movie Elf together.

How is this a Unique Christmas Scavenger Hunt?
While normally we just download a Christmas light scavenger hunt from someone else’s blog (like this one), this year we decided to mix it up a bit. We are having a major rain issue here in the Pacific Northwest, so I wanted to plan something that wouldn’t be completely outdoors. Further, creating a variety of potential interactions felt a bit more fun.
This Christmas photo and video scavenger hunt did have the outdoor lights and inflatable component. However, we added in options to go into stores and homes to look for other items like ornaments, decor, clothes, and even gave opportunities to interact with strangers and friends.
We were calling friends to see who was home and what they could contribute. Knocking on other doors as a surprise visit or asking strangers to sing in a store were both highlights.
While any change to tradition comes with a bit of pushback, after the race around town happened, everyone agreed that this was a more fun way to do a Christmas scavanger hunt.

What Were the Rules of this Holiday Scavenger Hunt?
We gave an hour and a half for teams to go on the hunt. You had to be back by the time determined or you were deducted 3 points from your team.
We always do boys against girls. This scavenger hunt can easily be done with youth groups, teens, friends, or families. Just break up the teams into groups that fit into the cars you have available.
When the race begins, teams set out to complete the lists. They must get a photo or video of every item on the list. At least one team member needs to be featured in each photo or video. Some of the items on the list require every member to be in the picture.
We could not get items from the families that are in the race. For example, we have family photos with Santa in our front hall. That would not count. We had to find photos of someone else’s family.
The team that arrives back with the most items found wins. If there is a tie, the team that arrives back first is the winner. We have never had a prize attached, but that could be a fun element.
We also tell drivers they can’t drive more than 5 over the speed limit.
Important note: for the last 4 years, the girls have won. I’m not competitive at all.
