Helping Children Find their Purpose

What is a purpose of life? Helping children find their purpose at a young age will only aid in their sense of importance. Why are they important? They were created by God. They were created in a unique way with very special talents and gifts to bring to the world. When you believe in the Bible, your purpose becomes a lot more clear. Our purpose is to glorify God. How do we do that? Last year we adopted our church’s purpose statement and created a unique piece of art to show that purpose. I hope you will click back to check out the simple word art, but the phrase is, “Love God. Love One Another. Love the World.” Love one another is referring to fellow believers. Loving the world doesn’t speak of loving worldly things but showing God’s love to a hurting world that doesn’t know Him yet. In speaking of purpose today, I was able to talk to my kids about those things. I wanted to break it down a little further to ask the question more specifically for my unique children. How do they go about glorifying God? They can learn to obey his commands and love others. I wanted them to look a little bit about how they were created. The question I posed was, “What unique talents or character qualities did God give you?” Once we talked about that, I followed up with the question, “How can you use that character quality or talent to glorify God?” It was a big brainstorming time. Abby was able to identify that she was creative. She also said, “I like school, and I’m good at it.” Those are two things she was able to identify in herself on the fly. There are so many more gifts and talents each one of our kids have and will discover at a deeper level as they continue to grow. Abby did great at knowing that those are two gifts from God. So, the follow up question: “You are creative. How can you use that to glorify God.” She said that she can make cards for people like we put in the homeless packs we made last Christmas. Fabulous. It’s clicking. We then talked about how she can glorify God with her love for learning. We talked about how she could learn more about God, study well and be able to teach others. Now on to Kenzie. With her being younger, I helped her identify some gifts or talents I think she has. Kenzie loves to sing. She sings all the time. We took her out tubing the other night behind the boat, and she just sat back there by herself singing. She makes up songs. It’s hard to tell, at this age, where it will go. She can carry a tune and match notes I sing. Her songs are sweet, from the heart and have the tune of…well, a four year old. Her songs are often about Jesus, so it was easy to tie in how she could use a talent of singing to glorify God in praise or leading worship someday. We also identified that Kenzie is good at making friends. When we are out at a park or play area, she’ll go up to anyone and say, “Do you want to be my friend?” Don’t you love children that way. It’s so simple. We discussed how making friends is essential in loving, serving and telling others about Jesus.

God created you with unique skills, talents and character qualities. You can find purpose in your own life by evaluating those and asking God, “How do you want me to use who I am to glorify you?” He’ll create a vision and a passion and put you in the place he wants to use you if you come with an open and willing heart to follow Him.
