When I first began my character development series, I had not started doing the “I Will” statements yet. Today, I will add in some “I Will” statements for respect since our fifth week of the year is a focus on “respect.” We made this cute board to highlight the focus phrases. I got the idea for “I Will” Statements from “Character First,” a character based curriculum. Although I haven’t used a lot of their content, I wanted to give them credit for this idea. Our four phrases this week are:
1. I will honor my father and mother.
2. I will wait my turn to speak (this has come with a few of our character development because it not only fits but still needs some improvement in our world).
3. I will have manners.
4. I will obey right away.
This main concept was used, with permission, from the Character First Education Curriculum.

We are adding “I will use nice words and a nice voice” to our respect statements. This addresses the bad attitude/not having a happy heart. 🙂 Thank you for all of your amazing resources and your heart to be intentional with your kids. :)Blessings in Jesus!

I utilize your blog, your insights, your ideas, your activities and your visuals alongside of Laying Down The Rails by Sonya Shafer and the bible. Portia, What an amazing message of encouragement to receive. How you described motherhood is exactly how I feel. Those challenging moments are what really inspired me to write the blog in the first place. I have wanted to see this as a ministry. I am so encouraged to know when people are really grasping on to the heart of this blog. It puts wind in my sails. Thank you so much for taking the time to write to me. I can’t thank you enough for letting me know how my own journey is helping your family! Blessings! Jodi
oh goodness…i have many typos….the font in the comment writer is much different than appears after posted. i apologize.
I’m so excited to have found your amazing resources. We are a Christian family, “doing everything right” and still struggling. I feel like the Lord has led me here. Thank you for all that you do.
So glad you found me too. I am so sorry it has taken me so long to respond. Life got away from me. Parenting certainly is a humbling experience. I know that all too well. Hang in there, and please let me know how I can help. I have learned that some kids are just going to challenge this journey more but that we can find techniques to help as we try and truly reach their heart.
