Lightsaber Cupcakes for a Star Wars Party
My friend’s daughter’s birthday was quickly approaching, and she asked, “Can you please make me a lightsaber cake?” I explained to her that I’m willing to make her a cake, but lightsabers are so long and thin that doing cupcakes might work out better. I did a quick image search to show her some ideas, and this was the first inspiration picture we saw.
It was a Facebook post, but the picture credit was unknown. While I want to give the credit where credit is due, I also recognize that I couldn’t find the original creator. I also realized that beginner or novice bakers might have a hard time duplicating the idea without full instructions. I wanted to provide a lightsaber cupcake tutorial so people would know how recreate this out of this world idea.

- Black Cupcake Liners
- Red Food Dye
- Blue Food Dye
- Black Food Dye (If you find the black food dye you use turns your frosting more purple, add yellow food dye to neutralize it)
- Black Fondant (I used black sugar sheets from Wilton, but I’m not sure they make them anymore)
- Red Fondant
- Pastry Bag
- 1M Tip
- Fondant Roller
- Pizza Cutter
- Straight Edge
- 24 Chocolate Cupcakes
- Buttercream Frosting (this is my go-to recipe)
Note: I recognize that there is now greater awareness of food dyes and their potential harm. While I do avoid overly processed foods with dyes added, I haven’t explored the more natural food dye options for cake decorating. I encourage you to do your own research. I tried to look on Amazon for some more natural choices, but they didn’t get great reviews, so I’m hesitant to recommend them if I haven’t tried them.
How to Make Lightsaber Cupcakes for a Star Wars or May the 4th Party
Video tutorial below for your convenience.
- Make chocolate cupcakes and bake them in black cupcake liners.
- Color about 40% of the frosting red, 40% of the frosting blue, and 20% gray.
- Decorate 9 cupcakes red, 8 blue, and 6 gray. To do this, hold your frosting tip at a perpendicular angle to your cupcake, slightly above the surface of the cupcake. Swirl up from the outside to the center of your cupcake.
- For the final presentation, we put the cupcakes on woven brown placemats.
- Line up 9 red cupcakes with 3 gray cupcakes at the end. Cross the blue cupcakes with the red at an angle. There should be 3 gray cupcakes at the end of that line as well for the handle.
- Roll out the black fondant thinly. I like to use this roller to get a thin, even 1/16″ piece of fondant.
- Cut thin strips of fondant in varying lengths, as shown in the photo and video. Allow these strips to dry and stiffen. To expediate drying process, AI says, “add 1-2 tsp of CMC or Tylose powder per 450g of fondant, use a fan or hair dryer on cool, or place pieces in a 170°F (77∘C77∘C) oven for 5-6 minutes. Other methods include using a food dehydrator, placing items under a warm lamp, or using a warm, turned-off oven with the light on.”
- Place the strips on the cupcake as shown in the photos and videos.
- Roll two small red balls out of fondant and place them on the cupcakes as shown.
