Minimalist Neutral Bunny Baby Shower Cake
This beautiful two-tiered cake captures woodland charm, making it a breathtaking centerpiece for a modern, gender-neutral baby shower. The tiers are decorated with warm, earthy, terra-cotta or taupe hues that give an organic tone.
Resting peacefully atop the baby shower cake is a cream-colored sleeping bunny, complete with a floral headband that incorporates the flowers used on the rest of the cake.
I purchased the fake flowers at Hobby Lobby. The goal was to have rustic, organic textures that wrapped around each level. Included in these choices were pampas grass (which did end up shedding more than I hoped, so you could find an alternative), a baby’s breath-like fake flower that had hints of pale pink, sprigs of silvery-green eucalyptus leaves, and star anise pods nestled into the greenery.
Displayed on a clean white cake stand against a neutral backdrop, this design balances minimalist modern elegance with cozy, boho-chic warmth.

The cake for both tiers was my white velvet cake, which is a modified box cake that includes sour cream. My Cake-Making 101 post will provide you with my best tips and tricks for baking cakes and decorating cakes with frosting, but I will include tips in this post as well.
The filling on the bottom tier was a passionfruit curd that I purchased at World Market. By the way, I also found pre-made cannoli shells at World Market and was able to make an additional dessert with the leftover chantilly cream I used on the top tier.
The top tier had a homemade raspberry compote, fresh raspberries, and a chantilly cream.
The frosting used was my favorite buttercream frosting recipe.
The molded bunny on the top of the cake was made from modeling chocolate. In addition, I used sculpting tools to create the bunny and edible pink luster dust for highlights.

Decorating a Modern Bunny Baby Shower Cake
Part of the challenge of decorating a modern, clean cake is getting the edges smooth. People think, “Oh, I just want a simple cake with smooth edges.” For me, it is anything but simple, but I have some tips to help.
Always keep your metal cake scraper clean and warm. I like metal because it heats up nicely. I either run mine under hot water or use a creme brulee torch to heat up the edge of the tool. Furthermore, you want to have a long, continuous turn of your cake turntable. Do this by reaching around the turntable as far as you can, and smoothly rotating the cake as you hold your scraper perpendicular to the cake base and at a 45-degree angle while using gentle pressure.
As you smooth out the edges, you might find gaps in your frosting. Just add more buttercream to the spotty areas and try to smooth again.

Once you have two clean, frosted tiers, stack them. I use 3 jumbo smoothie straws as dowels for my cake layers because they are easy to cut and provide stability.
After that, add your neutral-toned flowers, greenery, and star anise.
The most challenging but rewarding part of decorating this cake was sculpting the bunny. This is my second time working with modeling chocolate. I am a hobby cake decorator, by the way. My first time was making my Baby Yoda cake. I have fallen in love with modeling chocolate. It is way easier to work with than trying to sculpt fondant or gum paste.
I don’t know if I have tons of advice for sculpting. Creating the body shape came first, and then adding the limbs, head, and ears. Texture came next, and I finally added a small flower crown made from the fake flowers put on the tiers of the cake. Pink luster dust was used in the ears, eyes, and crevices to add color and depth.
