Dutch Babies are one of my family favorites. I grew up calling these “silly pancakes” with my family because of the fun shapes they make as they bake in the oven. They are super easy and delicious. It is definitely a fast family Saturday morning go-to in my family. You just mix 3 ingredients up in a blender, throw it in a pan with melted butter and let it bake. You can top them with lemon and powdered sugar, fruit, hot fruit with sour cream or yogurt, canned pie filling with lemon juice and cinnamon, plain old syrup or my favorite (because I grew up with a dad who thinks peanut butter is one of the food groups) peanut butter and syrup. We love breakfast for dinner at our house, and this is so simple that we definitely make these quite a bit. Enjoy!
4 eggs
1 cup milk
1 cup flour
1/3 cup butter
Place butter in pan and set in a 425 degree oven. While butter melts, mix batter quickly. Put eggs in a blender or food processor and whirl at high speed for 1 minute. With motor running, gradually pour in milk, then add flour; continue whirling for 30 seconds. Remove pan from oven and pour in batter. Return to oven and bake until pancake is puffy and golden brown – about 17 minutes.
I hope you enjoy making these at home. I imagine they’ll quickly become a family favorite in your world.
Jodi– I have to tell you that I make these for guests a lot! It is my easy stand by– and I ALWAYS think of you when I make them and Julie’s wedding day when you made them for us that morning. Fun to see the recipe re-posted here again! 🙂
I grew up on these as well and now my kids are too. They love them. Growing up we called them Oven Pancake, but now, they are called Puffy Pancakes. In regards to your dad’s love of peanut butter, I think it was your family who got me hooked on Peanut butter and cheese in a melted in a tortilla.
Making these now…I’ll let u know how the fam likes them 🙂
Sounds easy and yummy! I’m going to try it!
what is that never heard of it..???
Here’s a Wikipedia article. It is a German pancake with a little more sweetness and air whipped in to make it rise and be light and fluffy. You aught to try it. They’re the best.
what size pan are you using and how many does this feed? Does it work well in a cast iron skillit, or is it best in the glass pan you display?
Cast iron skillets are great and more traditional. I just don’t have one. I do it in a 9×13 glass pan…actually two of them since we eat so much for it. 🙂 Let me know how it goes! Enjoy.
