Modern Two-Year-Old Train Birthday
This fantastic train party was put on by my sister-in-law. She always delivers when it comes to presentation. This is a black-and-white-themed railroad party, and I get to share all the details with you.
Whether you are looking for train ideas related to table decorations, cakes, cupcakes, or overall decor, you have come to the right place.

Here is a list of items needed to create the above look for your railroad party.
- Small White Table – This was the birthday gift for their two-year-old. He would use this table as his train table. I thought it was so clever to turn it into part of the decorations. It is the Carolina Activity Table from Pottery Barn.
- Cricut Designs – My sister-in-law made the “chugga chugga” and the happy birthday train at the front of the table using her Cricut. The cupcakes and cake toppers were also made on the Cricut. Images were bought on Etsy. There are very similar cupcake toppers here.
- 6 Foot White Balloon Ring Arch
- Gray Balloons – To attach the balloons to the arch, there are two techniques to choose from. The first involves tying two balloons together. Then, tie another two together. Combine these to make a group of four. Twist the group of four around the ring. Glue dots can be used to add more or keep things in place. The second method uses the balloon strip that comes with balloon arch kits. The strip has holes where you stick the tied end of the balloon. Simply place the balloon all along the strip and then wrap the strip around the balloon arch. Again use balloon glue dots (available in most kits) to keep balloons in place or place more balloons. If you are a visual learner, here is a YouTube video with another strategy.
- Black Funnel – This industrial-sized funnel was like the train engine chimney.
- TWO TWO printed out on white stock paper and cut into ovals. Print the words out on a horizontal Word document to make it happen.
- Wooden Train Set
- Light Box with Letters spelling “All Aboard”
- Two Tier Black Serving Trays were from IKEA, but here’s an option on Amazon.
- Wooden Train Whistles as Party Gifts
- Railroad Crossing Sign
- Rectangular Black Serving Tray to Set Train Whistles On
- Black Paper Plates
Table Decor for a Modern Train Birthday Party
These cute table decorations carried the train theme perfectly. The adorable wooden train down the center was actually handmade by my husband’s grandpa, so it would be hard to replicate. However, I will provide a free printable for the railroad sign as well as a supply list so you can try and duplicate the other ideas shown here.
I thought it was super clever to cut out the railroad crossing signs and cover them with a clear plastic plate so you could see the sign through the plate.
- Railroad Printable – Free
- 7.5″ Clear Plastic Plates
- Black Plastic Silverware
- Black Paper Cups
- Black and White Paper Straws
- Black Paper Train Track – Made and cut with Cricut
- Wooden Train – The one featured was handmade by my husband’s grandpa, but here is one I found on Amazon if you want to duplicate the look and have a wonderful toy for your children.
Simple Cake Idea for a Chugga Chugga Two Two Train Party
The black and white sprinkles make this little cake fit the theme perfectly. I believe the track makes a small circle, so you will need a 10.9″ cake stand to make this look become a reality.
You won’t be disappointed with my white velvet cake and my favorite buttercream recipe. Simply bake and decorate your cake with the white buttercream and then press the sprinkles onto the sides.
The train cupcake toppers can be made with a Cricut and toothpicks, but there are very similar ones here. The cake topper was also made with Cricut. You will want black cupcake liners as well.
Chugga Chugga Two Two Train Birthday Party – Drinks and Gifts
Lemonade, water, and coffee were the drinks of choice for this modern two-year-old train birhtday. The theme was incorporated with more train tracks and another railroad sign (see printable above).
My sister-in-law pays attention to all the details. Our invitations were tickets (see bottom left of photo above), and the presents were wrapped to match the train theme. Isn’t it adorable?
Are you inspired yet? It’s such a fun theme, and turning two is kinda a big deal. I hope you enjoy all of these milestones with your family and friends.
