My sister-in-law throws amazing parties. I love to see her creative take on a celebration, and these picnic birthday party ideas come straight from her daughter’s second birthday party. Her attention to detail always amazes me. If you are looking for inspiration for your own picnic birthday party, I think you’ll love the ideas you find here.
It’s fun when a one or a two year old has a birthday because the mom can still pick the theme. After that, kids tend to have opinions. I loved the picnic themed party, and I really believe it could be done for a variety of celebrations including: graduation parties, baby showers, adult birthday party or a casual wedding shower. A classic red and white checkered table cloth sets the backdrop for the entire look. (affiliate)
Every party needs an adorable invitation that hints at what will come. These invitations fit the theme perfectly, showing both the colors and design of the party. Based on the date on the invitation, you can also see that I’ve had these pictures in my photo collection for almost a year and am finally blogging about it. I wanted to wait until picnic season was upon us once again.
One thing my sister-in-law has done is kept the nine frames in the background (6 pictured) seasonal (affiliate link). She changes them out with every new event. She was able to fill them with the papers that matched the decor. I always love to see what will fill the frames at her gatherings.
For the party favor, each place setting had this adorable mini picnic basket (affiliate link). Each basket had a gourmet chocolate from See’s Candy.
The food spread was beautiful and perfect for a picnic theme. We had hoagie rolls with an assortment of meats and cheeses. There was an array of condiments and other sandwich toppings. Some of the sides included potato chips, watermelon, chopped vegetables with ranch, and potato salad. Chocolate brownies were the end to a perfect picnic meal.
I told you that my sister-in-law pays attention to the details. Even Ainsley’s little play kitchen birthday gift was covered by a checkered red table cloth. You can see the balloons that match the theme as well. Isn’t my niece just the sweetest? That face!

Pink and Orange First Birthday
Where are the blue napkins from?
Hi! I asked my sister-in-law where she got them from, and she didn’t remember since I believe it’s been almost five years. In looking closer, however, I am pretty sure she used scrapbook paper as the placemat. I had asked her about the napkins, but I think she was thinking of the ones on the plate rather than the blue flowered paper underneath the plate. My guess is that she found it at Michael’s, Hobby Lobby or Joanne Fabric. I know that sends you on a while goose chase during a pandemic. I hope you find something comparable that you like. Another option I’ve done in the past to get a look I like at an affordable price is to find a great wrapping paper and cut it down to size…as either a placemat or as a table runner. Hope that helps.
Hi! I know this is an old post, but I still find these party decorations adorable and want to use this theme for my daughter’s 2nd birthday this Fall. Can you share the details of the invitations? I’d love to use the exact template. Thank you!
Hello! I really want to be helpful with this, but I’m not sure I can help much. My sister-in-law did this party, and she just gave birth to her 4th baby. She’s so busy, and I’m just not wanting to add this to her plate. I know she spends a while looking for the right papers, stamps, and fonts. I wish I could be more help, but the timing just isn’t great. Thanks for understanding.
