Snowflake Pipe Cleaner Craft
Winter is coming. This snowflake piper cleaner craft is a fun craft for kids to bring in the chilly weather.
How old should children be to do this craft? This craft was originally done with my children in 2013. They were 4 and 6. My four-year-old needed some assistance, but with step-by-step instructions, by six-year-old could work independently.
As always, I encourage you to be OK with kids being stretched a bit. It’s OK to feel frustrated and learn to overcome. That is actually beneficial. Keep it enjoyable and skill-appropriate.
It uses simple, inexpensive materials to create a unique Christmas tree decoration or a beautiful winter window hanging. Wouldn’t it be beautiful to hang a bunch of them from a home or classroom ceiling? This is a great craft for developing fine motor skills and creative play.
As mentioned, this post was originally written in 2013, but it was recently updated with better instructions for your convenience.

- 4 Glitter White or Silver Pipe Cleaners (don’t let the word glitter scare you. They don’t shed.
- White Craft Pom Poms – 2 sizes (6 medium and 12 small)
- Bamboo Skewer
- Scissors
- Ruler
- Fishing Line
- Hot Glue (parents help) or Glue Dots (Kid Friendly)

How to Make this Easy Snowflake Craft with Pipe Cleaners
- Have kids tightly wrap a 12″ pipe cleaner around a skewer. They will need to make 3 spiral pipe cleaners. Once finished, they can carefully slide the pipe cleaner off the skewer.
- Lay the 3 pipe cleaners so they cross in the center and are equally spaced (center picture above).
- Carefully twist the center of the snowflake 2-3 times so they are secured together.
- Cut 6 x 1.5 inch pieces out of your fourth pipe cleaner.
- Twist the short pipe cleaner about an inch in from the tip of each pipe cleaner. This will give a three-pronged look at each end. My daughter found this easiest to do while I was holding the snowflake for her.
- With hot glue (adults assisted) or glue dots (kid-friendly), glue the larger 6 pom poms to the center wedges of the snowflake. Glue two small pom poms to the center wedges of each end.
- Fishing line can be tied to one of the pipe cleaners so they can be hung in a window, from the ceiling, or on a Christmas tree.

Lovely idea, although I don’t do well with hot glue.
Thanks. I know – hot glue can be a killer. You could always do them without the pom poms. Thanks for commenting.
