Joy
“Be joyful always.” – 1 Thessalonians 5:16
Today we were going to spend a bit of time in the car with my sick kids and their cousins. We had to drive about 45 minutes to drop their cousins off and then return home. So, I made up this game for the car ride. I made these smiley faces on paper plates. I set the timer every 10 minutes. After the time was over, if they had exhibited joy despite how they were feeling, I showed the smiley face. If there was whining or complaining, I showed the red face. I also had sticker charts for the girls. They’d get a sticker if there had been joy. If I started to hear whining, the plan was to hold up the “choose joy” sign, which I decided would be our phrase for the week. Luckily, I only had to hold up the “choose joy” sign once, and the behavior was corrected…for the girls that is. Corban was a different story.
A fun side story is there was a guy next to us that seemed to have a bit of road rage going on. He kept glaring at us and driving aggressively with an angry face every time he looked over. We couldn’t figure out why he was so mad. So, I held up the “choose joy” sign for him with a smile and a wave. He smiled and gave me a peace sign and the rage seemed to be over. We all laughed.
