Adorable First Birthday Party Theme for Boys
As is a number of the parties I have featured here at Meaningful Mama, this party was put on by my talented sister-in-law. Her little guy was celebrating his first birthday, and she chose the adorable birthday theme: bow ties and blue for Mr. ONEderful.
Details made the difference. From the decorations, cake, and even the first birthday outfit (aka diaper and bow tie) for the cake smash, our little guy was celebrated well.

How to Host a Stylish First Birthday Party for Boys
Your baby boy is one. What a milestone. Make it sweet with this light blue and bow tie party.
- Blow up light blue balloons. I have found an easy way to do that is with an air compressor, but if you don’t have one, here’s a little electric balloon pump.
- Cut a 3′ x 3′ circle on poster board or foam board. Use a Cricut to cut out “Mr. ONEderful” as well as your child’s name, and adhere to the board with spray adhesive. Note: Vinyl lettering does not work on paper. If you use the Cricut transfer paper, the transfer paper sticks to your paper, ripping the surface as you pull away. Hang the sign centered within the circle.
- Attach the balloons to your circular balloon stand. Here’s a video tutorial that will help.
- Blow up the silver stars with helium. Here’s an at-home option. Put those on a string and elevate the balloons above the balloon circle.
- Make the “O-N-E” bunting. The Cricut can cut these for you, or you can use a bunting template like the one found here. Cut the 11″ tall bunting in light blue paper and one slightly smaller in white paper. Cut out the letters O-N-E using your Cricut. Make small blue buttons and a black bow tie. There are bow tie patterns on the Cricut app. Alternatively, you can find one here.
- Print out my cupcake liner template on light blue paper and cut it to size. Place fully baked and decorated cupcakes in normal liners into the cut, light blue paper liners. Here’s the cake and buttercream recipes I recommend. Use the Cricut or hand cut out the bow ties in two different sizes. Layer the big bow tie – glue dot – toothpick – glue dot – small bow tie to give that 3-D effect. Sprinkle your serving trays with silver stars and position cupcakes accordingly.

How to Make a One-Year-Old Smash Cake with a Blue Bow Tie Theme
Who doesn’t love the one-year-old smash cake tradition? It’s often the first time a child is exposed to treats. Kid, it only goes up from here. You get to strip them down to the diaper and see their reaction to having a whole cake in front of them. It’s entertaining, for sure.
My sister-in-law gave us a simple yet effective design that even the most novice cake maker could replicate. Make sure to remove the paper items prior to the smash so that your child doesn’t consume anything inedible.
To make this, simply make a six-inch cake using the recipes I gave above for the cupcakes. Using a 1M tip, squeeze the buttercream at a 90-degree angle to the cake, stop squeezing almost immediately, and pull away. Here’s a video tutorial that shows the concept.
The blue buttons and bow tie will be made out of paper. The cake is surrounded by silver tinsel garland.
Make a tall number one with your Cricut, tape or glue dot it to a skewer, and stick in the center of the cake.

I hope you feel inspired by this fun and charming first birthday party idea.
