Humility

If you are new to our character development series, I want to let you know that role playing is a way we use for kids to really grasp the concepts we are trying to teach them. You can search our site for role playing to see other ways we have used it in the past. This week we decided to act out some situations where we could demonstrate humility. We acted out the given scenarios by first behaving with pride. This was so they could see how ugly and unpleasant pride looks. We then re-did the situation and acted with humility. I helped them and acted out some of these situations with them. I wanted to model what both pride and humility looks like.
1. You Win a Soccer Game
Pride Statements: I Won! I’m amazing! I scored the only goal! Did you see how well I did?
Humility Statements: Yeah! Good job, team! Nice playing! Thanks for passing me the ball. You assisted in that goal.
2. You Score an A on the Test
Pride Statements: I’m so smart. I did better than everyone in the class.
Humility Statements: I’m so glad I studied. Mom, thanks for helping me learn that. I’m so happy. That feels really good.

3. You Have a Lot of Friends Who Invite you to Play with Them
Pride Statements: I’m so popular. Everyone likes me. Everyone wishes I was their friend.
Humility Statements: I have such nice friends. I’m so glad Allie invited me over.
4. You Beat Someone at a Game
Pride Statements: I’m so good at this. I won! You lost!
Humility Statements: You played well. That was hard. Great job. Want to play again?
5. You Audition for the Choir and You Get In
Pride Statements: I have an amazing voice. They’re lucky to have me.
Humility Statements: I’m glad I practiced. I’m so excited to be in this choir. Thanks for helping me practice my audition piece.
