Amazing Baked Chicken Dijon
This baked chicken dijon is both flavorful and moist. The crispy breaded outside adds a great texture to the meal. The dipping sauce is rich and flavorful. It won’t disappoint.
I love that this is a make-ahead meal that can be refrigerated and then just popped in the oven when it’s go time. Preparing a meal a day ahead is a game changer for busy families or other preparations involved in family gatherings.
If you are looking for a meal to deliver to others, this tasty baked chicken dijon is the perfect option. It can be baked ahead of time and delivered or delivered before baking so the recipient can put their meal in the oven at their convenience.
This dish is always well received, so if you know someone who just had a baby or is going through a hard time right now, I encourage you to try this chicken dijon recipe.
Ingredients Needed to Make this Baked Chicken Dijon (serves 8)
- 4 boneless, skinless chicken breasts, cut in half
- 5 tsp Dijon mustard
- 1/2 cup butter
- 1 clove garlic
- 2 Tbsp fresh parsley, minced
- 5 Tbsp Parmesan cheese, shredded
- 3/4 cup Panko breadcrumbs
- 3/4 cup homemade breadcrumbs (store-bought ones work as well, but homemade is always better)
Note: Sometimes I substitute the fresh parsley and bread crumbs with Italian bread crumbs.
Ingredients Needed to Make Dipping Sauce
- 1/2 cup mayonnaise
- 1/4 cup Dijon mustard
How to Make this Baked Chicken Dijon Recipe
- Melt butter in a saucepan over low heat.
- Add garlic. Simmer on low heat for 5 minutes.
- Blend in 5 tsp mustard, stirring well.
- Remove from heat and let cool enough to touch by not solidifying. Whip vigorously until the mixture thickens.
- In a shallow dish, mix parsley, cheese, and breadcrumbs together, blending well.
- Dip chicken breast in butter mixture, coating all surfaces.
- Next, dip the chicken in the breading mixture, packing crumbs onto the chicken to coat well.
- Place chicken in a single layer in a low pan.
- Cover and refrigerate for several hours to set breading.
- Place chicken breasts in a sheet pan and bake at 350 F for 24-30 minutes. Chicken should be lightly browned and moist on the inside. The internal temperature should be 165 degrees Fahrenheit.
- While chicken bakes, stir together the mayonnaise and Dijon mustard until completely combined.
- Optional: Top with freshly grated Parmesan.
- Serve with dipping sauce.
How Can Little Kids Help Make this Chicken Dijon?
I always want to encourage parents to get kids to help in the kitchen. Teaching kids to bake and cook provides a sense of family and helps them take more ownership of their food.
Here are some ideas to get kids to help with this meal:
- Cut and strip the fresh herbs.
- Unwrap the butter.
- Measure and dump the ingredients.
- Stir the mixture.

What is Chicken Dijon?
Chicken dijon is typically a pan-seared chicken in a rich, savory dijon sauce.
What is Different About This Baked Chicken Dijon?
Baked chicken dijon is made in the oven rather than on the stovetop. It is also served with a dipping sauce rather than having the sauce on top. The breading also sets it apart. It’s a similar flavor combination, yet with a different presentation. Baking it in the oven is what adds to the convenience of this recipe.
Where does Chicken Dijon Originate From?
According to Flavors of the Sun, “In France, where countless versions exist, this dish would be called Poulet à la Moutarde or Poulet à la Dijonnaise, both names signifying that the chicken is cooked with Dijon-style mustard, which originated in the Dijon region of France.”
What can I serve with Chicken Dijon?
Potatoes, rice, orzo, roasted vegetables, salads, and bread can all be served with chicken dijon. I will provide some great side recipes for you here:

This meal of Baked Chicken Dijon was delivered as a blessing by Jodi Durr to the house of my daughter-in-law Jessica in celebration of her newborn baby Esther Rose. We all ate it together, and it was a fantastic meal. The Dijon mustard dipping sauce complemented the baked chicken very well. I will definitely be making this for myself in the future. Thank you so much for blessing Jessica and her family(and myself!).
What a great review. Thank you so much, Doug. I actually just made it for my own family tonight, and it continues to be a favorite. I’m so glad it’s becoming a regular for your family as well. You are so welcome for delivering the meal. We are thankful they are in our lives.
